Scattered Rhymes was written for the 2012 Atlantic Music Festival, then significantly revised and expanded in 2014. Upon hearing the premiere, it was obvious to me that the material was bursting from the score and needed more space to satisfy the intended form.Scattered Rhymes is a set of integrated variations. The themes is presented at the end by the clarinet, comprised of two complimentary phrases with an intermediary descending scalar phrase. Fragments of the first variation and extended solo passages for the clarinet and violin based on this material are dispersed throughout the piece, articulating the form and creating a web of referential moments.
